Fabric Tues

  So for  Father's Day I worked on a Father's Day apron at my local sewing machine shop that also hold classes.  At first I was not to enthused about making an apron. Then I thought about that my husband has wanted a grill for a long time now. So an apron was made to go along with his new grill.  

I did finish it, but it is in need f a cleaning from all the grilling on Sunday.  I saw someone that I knew in the store that day and she said that I was wrong for allowing him to grill himself on Fathers Day. I said I couldn't deprive him of playing with his new toy, right!  It turned out to be a really good day.

So above is the new fabric that I got in the mail from the Fat Quarter Shop.  This is the Bloggers Choice pick for June. Cara Wilson from Cara Quilts is the blogger that put this set together. I think that I am going to save it for when I get pregnant, hoping for a girl.

My grandmother has decided that she is done quilting so she passed to me a good bit of fabric. The pill on the table is only what I am planning to use soon.

Here is what I have started with just today. I am excited about the out come of this one.  This is new territory for me.  I took a peak at the tutorial on Spider Web from Quilt It. I glanced at it and figured, "oh, that's simple enough". A peak meaning I did not follow her instructions. We shall see. I am going to add this tutorial from Quilt it the coming tutorial section of the blog.

W.I.P 5/9/12

Although today has been busy already and more business ahead, I am mentally focused and stress free. So first thing first.  I am still working on the Scrappy Comic Strip quilt for Josiah. I didn't get to work on it at all yesterday but am at it again today.  My plain was to be done with that and to be moving on to the next project. My work space is teeny tiny so I don't like to start on more that one project at a time.

I am working on making it very colorful and inspiring to compensate for the lack of space.

Here is the top half (not quilted) back of the scrappy comic strip quilt. This quilt is really an example of "working with what you've got".  With this one I am attempting to quilt straight lines.  Even though I reviewed Mama Love Quilts tips on quilting straight lines, I should have read them in more detail.  However, that is just one of my flaws.  To say the least, it isn't great at all but it will do as a throw quilt for Josiah.

As for another one of my mishaps, my bobbin thread and top thread was white (because it is all I had and I wasn't thinking) and the backing of the quilt is black. Even though I said that I would be transparent with my rookie mistakes, you will just have to use your imagination with how awful it looks. After I completely finish it I'll post it.

Venturing Blind

     Among the different quilt designs that I have come across, there is one that I have been dying to make with some scraps. I first saw this design on Quilt Dad's blog and I feel head over hills in love with it. However, that was before I started blogging and I did not save the picture.  So the photo below is the closes to the one I am currently trying to recreate.  

     I titled this post Venturing Blind because I have not found a pattern for it, however it appears simple enough.  I have always been a trail and error type of person.  More times than a few I have put the instructions to the side to try and figure whatever it was out for myself.  Sometimes it worked out well and other times, not so well.  However it is quickly becoming clear that trail and error can be a very expensive practice when it comes to fabric.

So with this particular design I began by making uneven strips from my scraps of the Super Hero quilt.

Then I proceeded to sew them together. Those of you who are pros at quilting or whom are familiar with this design are probably already shaking your head wondering, "why did you do that". I know I know!!  So now I have to take them apart.  Thank God its only five strips.
 

 

To proceed, I will cut matching widths of white fabric to go on both ends of the comic strips.   After the white strips are attached to both ends of the comic strips they all will be sewn together to make the completed quilt top.  Not sure how big it will be yet.  Stay tuned for the finished produce.
